The Luis Enrique Erro Library was established in the first months of 1942, its collection consisted of a few publications donated by astronomers and other publications that had belonged to astronomical observatories.

In 1943, Juan Presno was appointed head librarian.

The Library of Congress Classification System was first applied to the collection in 1975.

Also in 1975, the library had 1,200 books and subscriptions to 30 magazines about optics and astrophysics.

From 1978 to 1982, the Library directors were: Martha Olmos Flores, Lorena Porquillo Palacios, Héctor Gómez Palestino and Victoria Ramírez Saucedo, respectively.

On March 22, 1993, the Library is named after Luis Enrique Erro and was re-inaugurated. The place destined for the library was a beautiful building on a hill top within the Institute’s premises.

In late 1995, the Library Committee, headed by Ph.D. Alejandro González Sánchez, begins the important task of acquiring the Library’s Administrative System, called “SYDNEY PLUS”, this system would automate the library’s functions.

In January of 1996, Professor Olegario Ramírez García was appointed library advisor by Ph.D. Elsa Recillas P, which meant he was to help run the library.

In June of 1996, the library advisor is appointed head librarian, a job he continues to do today in favor of the automation and improvement of the Library.

The library’s automation process begins in February of 1997.

The creation of the Guillermo Haro Reading Room, which would be adjacent to the library, is proposed on September 24th 1998.

On June 15,1999, the old library’s holdings are transferred to a new building.

The inauguration of the new library (and its services) took place on June 28, 1999.

In 1999, Ph.D. Francisco Soto Eguibar carried out the organization and creation of a new Library Committee, which notably benefited the library’s development.

In late1999, the Library Committee decided to change the existing SYDNEY PLUS system for the SIABUC (Colima University Integral Library Administration System) due to the elevated maintenance costs of the SYDNEY PLUS system and because up dates were not mailed regularly.

The library begins using the SIABUC system simultaneously with SYDNEY on January 19th, 2000. Also, the Library Committee approved programs that would resolve existing problems within the SYDNEY PLUS system.

On June 26, 2000, the ISTEC Association helped create the first digital document in Monterrey. The digitization was possible through the use of a software called Phronesis (wisdom).

Through October 5th and 7th 2000, the first annual seminar for the “Continuous Training of Librarians” was held, thanks to the support of the CUIB (University Center for Library Investigations). The seminar was called “Collection Development” and was given by Eduardo Rubalcaba Burgoa B.A., Head of Acquisitions at the CUIB.

In October of 2000, the creation of the INAOE Digital Library was first planned, it would be called BiDiLEE and would be developed in stages each semester. It is still in development due to financial troubles.

The Annual Book Fair is instated and held from April 18th - 21st, 2001.
From June 27th through the 29th , the Second Annual Seminar was held, the main conference was called: “Select Themes in Consultation” and was given by Carlos Cópton G., Ph.D of Library Science.


The “Mesoamerican Digital Library and Long Distance Education Workshop” is held from May 15th-17th, 2002. The INAOE teaching staff and the ISTEC Association was given a lot of support in the realization of this workshop.

On October 2, 2002 the Phronesis collections are inaugurated, they’re called “INAOE Digital Documents” (DDI) which include 36 theses from 2000 to 2002 and the first technical report done by the Internal Digital Library Committee. This report was coordinated by the following librarians: Luis Sastré J., Juan Carlos Morales H., Ruth Carrera G., Juan Juárez D. and Olegario Ramírez G.

The Luis Enrique Erro Library Web Page was formally introduced to authorities on July 19th, 2007. One can consult the site from the exterior which means a considerable improvement from the original site. The creation of the web page was possible thanks to the efforts of Dr. Francisco Soto Eguibar, Director of Investigations and M.C. Miguel Martínez, Head of the AGC
